Hastings County's first winery-to-be, situated just north of Tweed, Ontario on Potter Settlement Road (nestled between Highway 7 and Highway 37 - linking Toronto and Ottawa).
Located on the very edge of the Canadian Shield - 'Potter Settlement's' sandy, highly mineral terroir and organically-grown grapes offers a unique selection of delicious and intensely flavourful wines found nowhere else in the world.
High granite outcroppings surrounding our vines provide thermal mass creating a micro-climate which protects our grapes from wind and cold - as well as giving impressive views to our guests. 'Potter Settlement' is a marriage of rustic, old-world charm with up-to-date winemaking techniques.
Great care and painstaking attention is being paid to ensure that everything about our winery is created custom -by hand - to the last detail to capture the essence of an earlier time; that modern environmental considerations such as low-impact organic farming, solar and geo-thermal energy are utilized to reduce our carbon footprint; and, most importantly, to ensure that our wines are perfected to the highest standard for a unique, unrivaled and enjoyable experience. Impressing and pleasing our future guests is our aim, and we're currently working hard to reach that goal before we open our doors to the public. POTTER SETTLEMENT WINES was founded in 2000 by Sandor, Ken and Maureen Johnson on land that has been owned throughout the generations by the family since the early 1800's.
'Potter Settlement' already consists of 10 planted acres of vinifera, hybrid and VQA-recognized grapes.
A Brock University graduate in the Oenology and Viticulture program in 1999, the family winemaker Robin Johnson has worked making and selling wine in Niagara, Ontario. He has been employed by Vincor, Thirty Bench, Flatrock, Colio Estates - as well as boutique wineries in British Columbia.
Working alongside our father, Ken Johnson - an amateur winemaker since 1988, Robin brings his education and his years of winemaking experience to 'Potter Settlement' to provide a varying selection of outstanding wines which will include FRENCH VINIFERA WINES: Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, Muscat, Reisling, Merlot HERITAGE HEIRLOOM WINES Marquette, Frontenac (Blanc, Gris and Noir), Vidal (icewine), Baco Noir, Marechal Foch, Petite Pearl FRUIT WINES Pear -along with hopefully a few other delicious surprises currently in experimental plantings.
